StandardVision Artist Spotlight: Exploring the Tensions & Violence of the Perfect Woman with Elena Rendina
For the month of May, StandardVision has curated a site-specific showcase of work by multidisciplinary artist Elena Rendina across a number of StandardVision’s large-scale exterior displays throughout Los Angeles.
A Swiss-Italian visual artist working in the fields of photography, performance art and animation, Rendina has an extensive background in fashion photography and creates highly stylized, intimate worlds to explore the tension and violence underlying traditional concepts of femininity. Often using her own body and image in her work, Rendina tackles concepts of societal expectations, isolation and the pursuit of perfection.
Alternately heroine and victim, she casts herself in ironic, uncanny, and often unsettling vignettes that highlight and undercut the absurdity of the Western ideal of domestic life. Sumptuous interiors are populated with props, set designs and costumes hand-made by the artist, who humorously subverts and reimagines materials associated with homemaking. Bread, pasta, bedcovers and tablecloths escape their traditional confines and find new worth as valuable tools of creative expression.
Fascinated by the idea of the perfect woman, Rendina has collaborated with a number of leading female creatives including Helena Bonham Carter, Maisie Williams, Sally Potter, Lily Cole and Vanessa Kirby. Her interest in interiors has led her to work with a number of historic homes such as Palazzo Visconti and Charleston.
Catch selected works by Elena Rendina on view at 3rd Street Crossing, 888 N Vermont, Courtyard Marriott LA Live, Kurve LA, and Melrose Crossing, through May 31st, and learn more about the artist on Instagram.
