SV Showcase presents the work of emerging and established artists in a site-specific, month long, exhibition on the #SVLA1 screen in Downtown Los Angeles.
This month, StandardVision has partnered with the Los Angeles Dance Film Festival in awarding three films with the StandardVision Showcase Award for Artistic Achievement.
The program will be on view from April 13 through May 14, Thursday – Sunday from 9pm-Midnight. StandardVision’s goal is to encourage audiences to participate with art in a new outdoor exhibition experience, and present curated contemporary art programming to the public.
A premiere for the showcase will take place on Wednesday, April 19 from 8pm - Midnight on the patio of the Yard House (800 West Olympic Boulevard, Los Angeles CA 90015), located across the street from the Courtyard Marriott screen. The directors of the film festival as well as three of the four filmmakers will be in attendance.
ABOUT THE FILMS
Cold Storage, directed by Thomas Freundlich, is a short dance film that pays homage to the virtuoso physical performances and melancholy comedy of the classic silent screen. On a desolate arctic shore, a lonely ice fisherman discovers his prehistoric counterpart frozen in the sea ice, and thaws him out as his newfound soul brother. A wild all-night drinking and dancing party in the fisherman's tent ensues, but in the harsh light of the morning he must once again confront his own loneliness and dependency.
Confrontation, directed by Shannon Janet Smith & Steven Butler, is a story of a painting come to life, confronting every individual who ignores its beauty. With frustration and the desire to be seen, it screams for attention and struggles to capture someone’s gaze. It only takes one. The person who sees the art for what it is and revels in her beauty.
Where Are You Now, directed by Frank Soares, Ashton Frederick, & Steven Diaz: Living in a world so unlike your own can cause relationships near and far to flourish or fumble. With fourteen months of being Japanese residents under our belt, the team of this video all shared common struggles of maintaining long distance relationships and opening up to the new ones as well in the land of the rising sun. Time, environment, and constant change...ingredients for perfection or disaster.
ABOUT LA DANCE FILM FESTIVAL
Founded by Alexa Roman and Betsy Uhler in 2017, LA Dance Film Festival aims to expand opportunities for dance filmmakers and increase visibility of dance film as an art form. In contrast to traditional dialogue-driven films, the dance film genre of cinematic storytelling offers unique ways to connect with characters and ideas that are far beyond familiar narrative approaches. Pairing dance with film provides a unique entry point for audiences to dive into stories that are not possible when either medium stands alone. LADFF's goal is to expand creation, collaboration, viewership and overall exposure of the dance film genre by exhibiting extraordinary international and local work in Los Angeles, the cinema capitol of the world.
