SV Presents: Façade by Daniel Savage (on view through 5/7)
https://vimeo.com/212640402A site-specific commissioned work as part of our SV Presents series, Façade is an animated film exploring the convergence of architecture and human emotion. Using geometric shapes inspired by the media facade itself and surrounding environment, abstract faces and figures appear and begin to explore self expression within a structured world.
Daniel Savage is an independent animation director and designer based in Los Angeles. He works with clients such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Al Jazeera as well as creating projects for the animation community such as Yule Log 2.0 and mixed.parts. His work has been recognized by the likes of Wired Magazine, The Society of Illustrators, and The Webbys and in 2012 he was named a Young Gun by the Art Directors Club. He has taught design and animation at SVA, NYU, and guest lectured at a wide variety of schools and events.

Founded by Alexa Roman and Betsy Uhler in 2017, LA Dance Film Festival aims to expand opportunities for dance filmmakers and increase visibility of dance film as an art form. Pairing dance with film provides a unique entry point for audiences to dive into stories that are not possible when either medium stands alone. LADFF's goal is to encourage creation, collaboration, viewership and overall exposure of the dance film genre by exhibiting extraordinary international and local work in Los Angeles, the cinema capitol of the world.
Cold Storage, directed by Thomas Freundlich, is a short dance film that pays homage to the virtuoso physical performances and melancholy comedy of the classic silent screen. On a desolate arctic shore, a lonely ice fisherman discovers his prehistoric counterpart frozen in the sea ice, and thaws him out as his newfound soul brother. A wild all-night drinking and dancing party in the fisherman's tent ensues, but in the harsh light of the morning he must once again confront his own loneliness and dependency.
Confrontation, directed by Shannon Janet Smith and Steven Butler, is a story of a painting come to life, confronting every individual who ignores its beauty. With frustration and the desire to be seen, it screams for attention and struggles to capture someone’s gaze. It only takes one. The person who sees the art for what it is and revels in her beauty.
Where Are You Now, directed by Frank Soares & Steven Diaz: Living in a world so unlike your own can cause relationships near and far to flourish or fumble. With fourteen months of being Japanese residents under our belt, the team of this video all shared common struggles of maintaining long distance relationships and opening up to the new ones as well in the land of the rising sun. Time, environment, and constant change...ingredients for perfection or disaster.
Day in the Life: Phillip K Smith III (on view through 4/30)
StandardVision’s Day in the Life series continues with a meditative look at American artist Phillip K Smith III interacting with his reflective mirror sculpture titled The Circle of Land and Sky, on display as part of Desert X. Filmed on location by Safety Third Productions.
Phillip K Smith III is an internationally acclaimed artist based in Palm Desert, CA who continually distills his concepts to create intensely physical, seemingly ephemeral, and highly meditative works that affect perception, breath, and pace of experience. Incorporating a sense of change in his work through shifting color or the movement of the sun, Smith challenges us to slow down and align ourselves with his work so that we can better see and hear the beauty that is in front of us.
Artist Takeover: Hayley Eichenbaum
Multidisciplinary artist and photographer, Hayley Eichenbaum takes over the Marriott screen with photographs from her “Mother Road” Series: Surrealistically mundane and mysterious depictions of the American landscape that blur the lines between fiction and reality. The SV Artist Takeover invites a different artist every two weeks to take over a recurring 15-second spot, showcasing their work to the public. You can read about Eichenbaum’s work here.
The screenings can be seen and enjoyed from multiple angles anywhere within a three block radius of 901 W. Olympic Blvd. in downtown Los Angeles, and the full program could be leisurely experienced with food or drinks at the Yard House across the street.
