SV Showcase presents the work of emerging and established artists in a site-specific, month long, exhibition on the #SVLA1 screen in Downtown Los Angeles.
This month, StandardVision has invited LA-based digital artist Campbell Logan to curate three animated films that embody the quickly approaching summer. Logan has known both Steve Smith and FLOAT for several years, meeting namely due to their similar aesthetics and comedic use of 3-D animation. For the Summer Sweet Wave, the artists use their generative talent to both poke fun at and celebrate California summer through their appropriations of stereotypes, aesthetics, and idols.
The program will be on view from July 13 through August 6, Thursday – Sunday from 9pm-Midnight. StandardVision’s goal is to encourage audiences to participate with art in a new outdoor exhibition experience, and present curated contemporary art programming to the public.
A premiere for the showcase will take place on Thursday, July 13 from 8pm – Midnight on the patio of the Yard House (800 W. Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90015), located across the street from the Courtyard Marriott screen.
ORION BEACH by Campbell LoganOriginally created as a music video for an 80 synth-rock album, Orion Beach quickly took on a life of its own to become what NPR calls “the ultimate chill zone.” Five fun-loving friends travel to a mysterious island where they shred on jet skis, relax on the beach, and battle crazy red-eyed giant heads to discover the secrets of the island on the chillest vacation ever. Logan created the piece using five of his friends and rotoscoping – a century old animation technique that uses live action footage as reference. About Campbell
Campbell Logan is an LA based video artist who primarily experiments with 3D animation software and game engines. He studied Video Art, Film and Animation in the Experimental Animation program at California Institute of the Arts. Most of his work mimics traditional narrative structure found in film, music videos and video games which consist of a few uncanny elements.
PRISMATIC PARADISE by FLOATPrismatic Paradise is a tropical escape created by collaborative artist duo FLOAT that moves between minimal and maximal aesthetics with LA’s most popular botanical emblems, the palm tree and bird of paradise. Kaleidoscopic dialogues beckon you into summertime Shangri-La, diffusing borders towards an ultimate chill state.
About FLOAT
FLOAT is a collaborative entity focusing on the intersection of art and interactivity. Founders Kate is a video artist and educator living in Los Angeles. She obtained her M.F.A. in Media Arts from UCLA in June of 2015, and completed her M.A. in Digital Art and Video in 2013. Much of Kate's practice involves the marriage of the visual and the aural, working with musicians and dancers to create inventive audio-visual experiences. She is the Director of Femmebit, a video art festival celebrating female artists working in video and new media in Los Angeles. She has had the pleasure of working with director Mark Pellington and musicians such as Silversun Pickups, Toro Y Moi, Kid606, Daedelus and RYAT.
Ben is a VR veteran and director who explores art and design through emerging technology. He has worked with Electronic Arts, independent game studios, VR startups, museums, galleries, and with hummingbirds on back patios surrounded by succulents. He is a founding member of Glitch City, a pioneering art and game collective based in LA, and Buffalo Vision, his studio dedicated to games and interactive VR. His work has been shown worldwide at Sundance, IndieCade, NAB Shanghai, and TIFF. His thoughtful and surprising interaction design stem from a lifelong pursuit of fine art and button pushing.
Collectively, their work has appeared on MOCA.tv, Creative Applications, VICE's The Creators Project, and at SFMOMA, SXSW, TIFF, Sundance, Slamdance, The Museum of The Moving Image, and in many national and international exhibitions. FLOAT also plays well with others, including Within, Sprueth Magers, Kaleidoscope VR, and WeVR.
THE GUYS by Steve SmithThe culmination of Steve Smith’s piece is one of dizzying neon colors and forms, all sickly sweet, melting in the summer heat. It takes us back to our childhood getting Looney Toons popsicles from an ice cream truck at the park, not being able to eat it fast enough in the sun, watching it slowly melt down our hands and splash on the ground – a deformed archetype of summer. It’s also reminiscent of the oppressively hot summers that Los Angeles has, only seeing life after dark as the sun disappears and glittering lights and neons start to illuminate the nights that blend together. Smith's piece is one that elucidates the feeling of summer, taking us to hang out with "the guys."
About Steve Smith
Steve Smith is an American artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. He's the art director for UK based record label Activia Benz and a founding member of Ghosting TV. He's currently featured in the 2017 Saatchi & Saatchi's New Directors' Showcase. He's 5'11" and pretty strong. In the past he's worked on projects with Adult Swim, MTV, Snap Inc., Vice & more.
