StandardVision Partners with CIRCA Art to Showcase YOUTH by Anne Imhof on the Courtyard Marriott LA Live

In collaboration with CIRCA Art, StandardVision is currently featuring excerpts from renowned multimedia artist Anne Imhof’s film YOUTH on the large-scale digital facade at the Courtyard Marriott LA Live in downtown LA through the end of this month. Coinciding with the largest presentation of the artist’s work in the United States to date and her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles at Sprüth Magers which opened during Frieze LA 2023, this initiative is part of a larger public showcase across a global network of large-scale LED facades in cities such as London, Berlin, Milan, New York, Seoul and Tokyo.

Set in Moscow,YOUTH depicts a group of wild horses running and together in a vast field covered in freshly fallen snow. They nurture one another and move beautifully and freely through the natural environment to the baroque strains of J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. As the day moves slowly into night, the film reveals the site to be an urban one: a historic social housing development located at the edge of the city. Severnoye Chertanovo, which was built in the late 1960s, was developed as an experiment in mass housing after the Stalinist era. Humans are absent from the film, which touches on ideas of space, displacement and disorientation.

YOUTH was originally intended to be premiered at the Garage Museum in Moscow in 2022, but was cancelled due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. With this global showcase marking one year since the conflict began, CIRCA Art and Imhof have organised a 24-hour fundraiser taking place on Friday February 24, 2023, with proceeds going to aid those affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Anne Imhof has emerged as one of the most acclaimed artists of her generation. Based between Berlin and New York, Imhof spent her formative years in Frankfurt am Main, where she taught herself to draw and make music while working as a bouncer at a local night club. Her practice has since evolved to encompass performance and choreography, painting and drawing, music, installation and sculpture. While her work is inherently multifaceted and continues to expand into ever more media, Imhof conceives her art-making from the vantage point of painting. Her poignant abstractions, whether composed as performance, as two-dimensional images, or in the form of sculpted and found objects, are distinguished by her mastery of perspective and framing. Imhof is a maker of pictures whose images—moving or stilled—point to the history of painting as much as to the fetishes of contemporary commodity culture.

Catch Anne Imhof’s YOUTH on view at the Courtyard Marriott LA Live through February 28th, and learn more about CIRCA Art, Anne Imhof, and the 24-hour Ukraine Relief fundraiser by visiting CIRCA’s website.
