StandardVision Partners with CIRCA Art to Present the First Digital Artwork by Frank Bowling on the Courtyard Marriott LA Live

In collaboration with CIRCA Art, StandardVision is currently featuring an excerpt from renowned abstract painter Sir Frank Bowling’s ARRIVAL—the artist’s first digital artworkon the large-scale LED facade at the Courtyard Marriott LA Live in downtown LA through the end of June. Coinciding with the artist’s solo exhibition in Los Angeles at Hauser & Wirth West Hollywood which opens on May 25th , this initiative is part of a larger public showcase across a global network of large-scale LED facades in cities such as London, Berlin, Milan, Seoul and Tokyo.

Marking the 70th anniversary of the artist’s arrival in London from British Guiana (now Guyana), ARRIVAL highlights the central role that immigration has played in making the city of London what it is today, offering a poignant opportunity for global audiences to reflect on the positive societal impact of migration. Bowling travelled to the UK at the age of 19 in May 1953, arriving in London during the Coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II on June 2nd. In his own words, he reflected: “The moment I arrived in London, I knew I was home.”

A world-renowned abstract painter, Bowling has spent the last six decades of his career dedicated to the exploration of paint and color, creating a powerful and original style that has influenced the art historical canon. ARRIVAL marks the first time that Bowling’s work has been shown in a digital context. Through crossfading two works from his iconic MAP PAINTINGS series—Texas Louise (1971) and Australia to Africa (1969-70)—Bowling created a premier digital canvas featuring a cascade of color. With paint being the main subject of Bowling’s body of work, his first digital piece is a vibrant exploration of the way that color washes, spreads, and emits light. In the artist’s words, ARRIVAL “[is] a whole world thing—70 years in the making.

Sir Frank Bowling Kt OBE, RA (b.1934) was born in British Guiana (now Guyana) and maintains studios in London and New York. For over five decades, his distinct painting practice has been defined by an integration of autobiography and postcolonial geopolitics into abstraction.

Catch Sir Frank Bowling’s ARRIVAL on view at the Courtyard Marriott LA Live through June 30th, and learn more about CIRCA Art, Sir Frank Bowling, and this global initiative by visiting CIRCA’s website.
