StandardVision Artist Showcase: Subverting the Human Form with Illustrator Lulu Lin

In collaboration with Vellum LA, StandardVision has curated a site-specific artist showcase of selected illustrations from interdisciplinary designer and artist Lulu Lin on view across a number of StandardVision’s large-scale exterior displays throughout Los Angeles through June 30th.

With degrees in industrial and contextual design and interests in software and app development as well as interior design, Lin’s multi-faceted background led her to pursue drawing in 2016 and she continues apace . Her distinctive, experimental illustrations have been described as subverting the human form in both surprising and engrossing ways. Often lumpy and fleshy, the images strike most viewers as playful, surreal, and sometimes unsettling.

Lin’s creative process is motivated by self-analysis, self-discovery, and self-awareness, allowing her and her drawings to become more in tune with both comprehending and communicating emotional experiences or states of being. Lin leverages distortion, abstraction, and surrealism in her works to accentuate and heighten the emotional impact of her drawings, offering the artist a unique way to conduct intrapersonal communication via her work.

Lulu Lin was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She holds a Bachelor's degree in industrial design(Shih Chien University, Taiwan) and a Master's degree in communication design(Designskolen Kolding, Denmark). Lin’s clients include Rimowa, Camper, Morgenbladet, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Adobe Creative, WePresent (by WeTransfer), among many others. Her inspirations come from a continuous, intuitive absorption of emotion, information and discovery in life. She is, therefore, constantly on the lookout for new ideas, new strategies and more efficient ways of accomplishing creative and meaningful works.

Catch selected works by Lulu Lin on view at Melrose & Spaulding, 3rd Street Crossing, and 888 N Vermont, through June 30th, and learn more about the artist on her Instagram.
