In celebration of Pride Month, StandardVision has curated a site-specific artist showcase of selected self-portraits from photographer and makeup artist Ryan Burke on view across a number of StandardVision’s large-scale exterior displays throughout Los Angeles through June 30th.

A multidisciplinary visual artist based in New York, Ryan Burke is best known for the conceptual and complex makeup he creates on himself and others. As a self-portrait artist for over 15 years, he has created hundreds of unique and dynamic looks which he photographs and often wears out in public. This on-going series of portraits is an ever-evolving exploration of identity and emotion through adornment, surreal makeup techniques and dynamic lighting.

Vibrant, striking, and surreal at times, Burke’s self portraits seek to convey something both unique and authentic through make-up. Considering himself a canvas for his pieces, Ryan Burke doesn’t take on a role, or create a character; rather, his portraits are an exploration of how color, texture and the unconventional can evoke a mood or a feeling.

Ryan Burke is a New York based artist who uses makeup, photography, and design to transform himself and others into otherworldly personas. He works as both a makeup artist and photographer in the fashion industry and is also known for his self-portraits in the fashion, art, and drag community. Ryan became interested in makeup while living in Los Angeles and exploring the nightlife and drag communities. He moved to New York in 2012 and joined Pat McGrath’s team in 2014 where he started working as a professional makeup artist. Ryan describes his style as a bit surreal, a bit sci-fi, and usually graphic and colorful.

Catch Ryan Burke’s self-portraits on view at 3rd Street Crossing, 888 N Vermont, Melrose & Spaulding, and Kurve LA through June 30th, and learn more about Burke on his website.
