StandardVision Artist Showcase: Illustrator Hoi Chan’s Dreamy Naturescapes Inspired by the Human Experience
StandardVision has curated a site-specific artist showcase from artist Hoi Chan on view across a number of StandardVision’s large-scale exterior displays throughout Los Angeles through May 31st.
A Hong Kong-born illustrator now based in New Orleans, Chan draws inspiration from his observations of nature and personal emotions. His work intricately weaves elements from the natural world, serving as a means to unravel and dissect the complex emotions that reside within the human mind. The artist translates these ephemeral feelings and moments into radiant scenes with dreamy color palettes drawn from photos he captures of his surroundings.
With a unique background of living in both Hong Kong and New Orleans, the tropical environments of these two locales significantly shape Chan's artistic expression. Influenced by the humidity-laden breeze, lush vegetation, and abundant rainfall of his surroundings, Chan crafts a distinctive color palette and embraces generous shapes in his illustrations. These elements not only reflect the external world that surrounds him but also serve as an extension of the intricate landscape of his emotional experiences.
Born in Hong Kong, Hoi Chan is an award-winning illustrator who now lives and works in New Orleans, LA. Chan collaborates with myriad brands and editorial clients, including Apple, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Figma, Bloomberg, Wired, The Atlantic, Spotify, Dropbox, Harvard, Asana, Barron’s, Cosmopolitan, AARP, Medium, Neo.Life, On Being, HuffPost, NPR, and many others. His work has also been recognized by organizations such as the Society of Illustrators, ADC Awards and American Illustrations.
