Gonot is the latest artist to be invited to take over the two week-long recurring 15-second spot to showcase their work to the public.Stephanie Gonot’s bread and butter is, well, bread and butter. And bananas, ice cream cones, popsicles, band-aids, oranges, Fanta, glitter, AstroTurf – you name it, she has photographed it; simplifying her compositions to the most basic elements that draw from her pop art historical predecessors. Her photographs are fun, bold, textured, and sometimes on the edge of uncomfortable (think baguette nestled between a man’s crossed legs). They are difficult to look away from –  seeming to quench our thirst for decadent desires and tempt every vice we have. Playing with our desires to ultimately diffuse them through a photograph is nearly unheard of, yet Gonot’s whimsical images do just that. Her inspiration began with Los Angeles and the overwhelming amount of visual stimulation. From classic golden California light to slews of cacti, crispy white sidewalks in summer sun, and even working in an ice cream truck,  she used her environment to inform and inspire her work. Gonot’s inclination towards framing and eye for color became apparent before her photographic career when she pursued her undergraduate degree in painting. While it will remain her first passion in the art world, she became impatient, finding photography to be not only a faster way to create images, but also something wildly enjoyable and eccentric. The nature of photography allows her more control to create her surreally perfect environments with bold colors, even shadows, and composition. While Gonot’s photographs have become iconic and immediately recognizable, she maintains a demeanor that is perfectly in line with her creative ethos – enjoying all things colorful, humorous, and edible.Gonot’s work has garnered her much attention from fine art institutions, corporate entities, and press. She has worked with clients that range from Adidas, Nike, and Garrett Leight to Bloomberg Businessweek, LA Magazine, Refinery29 and Nylon. You can catch Gonot’s work on the SVLA1 screen through June 4 as well as on her Instagram here.
