For this month's SV Showcase, StandardVision teamed up with 40 North Film Festival: an international, multi-night, event celebrating dance and film, located in San Diego, CA.

One of the three films featured in our December showcase is called "Moving Southwark" by Jevan Chowdhury. "Moving Southwark" is a magical realist take on one of 33 London Boroughs and oldest parts of London. Part of the wider Moving Cities remit to investigate culture and people via expressions of dance, we take you deeper into London, probing further into what makes up the people in a city. The narrator, Nadine Marshall and composer, Danny Odom form a score underwritten by 24 dancers.  Each dancer was asked to respond directly what’s on their mind in that given time, in that given moment. This film was commissioned and made possible by funding from the Arts Council England, Bermondsey Square and Institution of Civil Engineers.

Jevan Chowdhury is the founding member of Wind & Foster, a design driven creative studio. He is part of the board of trustees for Visiting Arts UK and Creative Director for the Institution of Civil Engineers 2015 ad campaign. Jevan is also Director of the Moving Cities project, an initiative presenting world cultures headfirst in a thoroughly dynamic, widely engaging, surprising and occasionally even playful style. His work in London, Paris, Prague and Athens has earned significant accolades with nominations in Sweden, Spain, the US and the UK. Jevan’s work is currently featured in broadcast, online and media publications including LensCulture, Yatzer, Globalshapers and Cinedans. You can view his latest works at www.windandfoster.com.

Chelsea Zeffiro from 40 North Film Festival writes about "Moving Southwark":

"'Moving Southwark' (2015), directed by Jevan Chowdhury, is part of an international dancefilm series, Moving Cities which was started in London in 2014. This film came to us early on in our submissions period and was the first film that really stood out to us at 40 NORTH Dance Film Festival because of its striking aerial shots and the dancers' riveting use of the gravity in this shifted perspective. Though all the films of the Moving Cities project are filmed in black and white, this is the only film of the series to be filmed from an aerial perspective and use a spoken word narration as the soundtrack. "Moving Southwark" made a huge impact on San Diego's 40 NORTH audience with it's impressive and graphic composition and impactful cultural relevance. Needless to say, it won one of two Audience Choice Awards at our 2nd annual festival (October, 2016). We weren't surprised when it was also one of the films selected by Standard Vision to be one of the 40 NORTH films screened during the month of December. Moving Cities has filmed dancers in the UK, Armenia, Belgium, France, Greece, Czech Republic and recently made their American debut in Dallas, Texas (2016). We would love to see them film in Southern California someday soon and are anticipating the 2017 release of their latest film from Barcelona!"

Moving Southwark will be screened on the SVLA1 screen in downtown Los Angeles, at 901 W Olympic Blvd., every Thursday - Sunday from 9pm-midnight until January 8, 2017.
