This is the third annual Above the Streets fundraising event benefitting Art Share L.A. It will take place Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 6-10:30pm. This year the event honors the Sixth Street Bridge Project for contributing to the transformation of Downtown Los Angeles. We share the pleasure of highlighting the artist and muralist Augustine Kofie.

Augustine’s work will be scattered around the city of Los Angeles through different outdoor media channels: large billboards, digital billboards, bus bench advertisements, and more. Using drafting as his inspiration, Augustine’s architecturally influenced images align beautifully with both Los Angeles’ history as well as it’s evolving urban landscape.

Originally a graffiti artist, Kofie was widely recognized in Los Angeles by the mid 1990’s. Street art then became the building block and inspiration for his later work: fostering interest in color and layering, as well as construction, form, and perspective. He has since shown in both solo and group exhibitions around the globe including many well-known galleries such as Avantgarde Gallery in Milan, Openspace in Paris, and FIFTY24SF Gallery in San Francisco. Kofie is now regularly featured in contemporary art books, catalogues and magazines.

Each year, Art Share L.A. serves our community of emerging artists and supports them through their artistic journey. Last year Art Share L.A. shepherded 350 artists through their gallery and opportunities programs; hosted events with over 4,500 attendees; held 25 gallery shows, 150 musical performances and 50+ poetry readings.

The Sixth Street Bridge Project will replace the Sixth Street Viaduct, an historic and vital connection between the growing Arts District and the Boyle Heights neighborhood on the east side of downtown. Built in 1932, the bridge spans nearly 3,500 feet across the Los Angeles River and is largely famed as the go-to visual representation of the rougher side of LA in numerous movies, TV shows, commercials, and music videos.

In recent years, the cement support structure of the iconic bridge had been faltering due to a rare chemical reaction and seismic vulnerability, spurring a $449 million renovation project. The new structure, designed by Michael Maltzan, will incorporate a variety of open spaces and parks, creating lasting positive impact on the surrounding community and economy as well as completely updating the appearance of the iconic area.
