With the goal of celebrating Los Angeles’s unique history and culture, StandardVision has created a rotating selection of stylized graphics featuring historical facts about the City of Los Angeles to be displayed publicly on the Courtyard Marriott screen in downtown LA. The historical series, comprised of everything from statistical information to unusual trivia, serves as a fun and informative addition to StandardVision's ongoing art program and is aptly represented through three distinctive visual styles from LA’s rich vernacular history.
The Print Works style pays homage to the art of printed posters, emulating block-printed typography and split fountain screen–printed gradient backgrounds. 1984 takes inspiration from the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, taking shapes and colors from the iconic branding manual. Lastly, Mid-Cent borrows from mid century modern design aesthetics, referencing the works of Ray & Charles Eames, Paul Rand, and others.
The colorful series offers both fascinating and whimsical nuggets of information, such as the fact that the Shirley Temple drink was invented in Los Angeles or that Beverly Hills started out as a modest lima bean ranch. The facts were sourced from a variety of entities including KCET and the Los Angeles Water and Power Associates and seek to celebrate the rich and interesting history of LA while engaging the community in local culture and discourse.
The facts can be seen throughout every day on the SVLA1 screen in downtown LA and will be rotating out every two months throughout the year.
