StandardVision Artist Showcase: A Vividly Whimsical Exploration of the Ordinary & Imaginary from Artist Wenjing Yang

For the month of July, StandardVision has curated a site-specific showcase from award-winning illustrator Wenjing Yang on view across a number of StandardVision’s large-scale exterior displays throughout Los Angeles through July 31st.

A multidisciplinary visual artist based in New York, Wenjing Yang’s work delves into the subtle relationship between the surreal and the real. Reality serves as a bridge to the surreal, providing a solid foundation upon which Yang builds worlds which transcend the everyday. Particularly drawn to the beauty of both natural and scientific order, Wenjing Yang’s compositions and creative process are also both informed by the possibility of disorder. Within a structured framework, she embeds rebellious elements to challenge viewers' perceptions.

Yang aims to question and expand the role and responsibility of illustration by inviting viewers to explore their own perceived boundaries between reality and the surreal. Creating work that explores whimsical and unexpected “what ifs,” Yang conjures imaginary, otherworldly concepts whilst still maintaining a level of ‘rationality’ in her compositions. Her brilliant use of color and luminescence both highlight and accentuate the themes and feelings throughout her work.

Wenjing Yang is an award-winning illustrator based in New York. She holds a bachelor’s degree from School of Visual Arts and a master’s degree from Maryland Institute College of Art. Wenjing Yang is regularly commissioned by commercial clients and brands, including the Washington Post, Kiehl’s, Meow Wolf, Fly by Jing, Mold Magazine, The Story, Spotify, Dasan Books, Wired UK, and Refinery 29. She is open to commissions of all kinds, accepting inquiries via email which can be found on her website.

Catch works by Wenjing Yang on view at 3rd Street Crossing, 888 N Vermont, Courtyard Marriott LA Live, Kurve LA, and 3500 6th Street through July 31st, and learn more about the artist on Instagram.
