https://vimeo.com/246506322This week’s StandardVision artist takeover on the SVLA1 screen at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles features photographer Vishal Marapon. Marapon is the latest artist to be invited to take over the two-week-long recurring 15-second spot to showcase his work to the public. His selected photographs will be on view through December 17, 2017.Vancouver based photographer Vishal Marapon has an adept ability to call attention to the objects and landscapes that are often overlooked in everyday life. His images are graphic compositions that are inspired by Marapon’s awareness of what he calls the “geometry of urban design.” These graphic compositions are comprised of cubes, stairways, buildings, basketball courts, fire hydrants, windshields, and more, conveying an appreciation and understanding of the delicate interplay between light and shadow, as well as to the juxtaposition of bold colors and delicate hues present in our environment. Marapon has taken the photographic medium, typically one that captures the dimensionality and depth of a subject, and uses it to flatten space into an image that is more painterly, evoking the likes of Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, or Sol LeWitt paintings. Marapon brings a new perspective to our respective mundane landscapes through his careful compositions, capturing sublime photograph paintings of commonplace scenes. Each transports us to new areas while inspiring us to draw our eyes upwards, downwards, and all around us ultimately increasing our awareness of the mundane scenes that hold a unique beauty. You can see more of Vishal's photography on his website and Instagram.
